SAFMARINE NUBA

An important milestone was crossed in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday 29 January 2019 with the berth at Port MGT, The SAFMARINE NUBA, an African biggest vessel of MAERSK line. SAFMARINE NUBA is 210.5 m, beam is 30 m and draught is 10 m. Her container capacity is 2478 TEU in heavy weight. The MGT Port was built to accommodate vessels of 5,000 TEUs with or without crane with depth of 17 m, he’s the only port in DRC built and designated to handle gearless vessels up to WAFMAX size.

The ship from Pointe Noire landed 453 TEU and loaded 389 TEUs, productivity with 2MHC 35gmph, 18 hours of operations. The operations ‘record time demonstrated the expertise acquired by our teams to satisfy our customers.

The challenge remains the improve nautical accessibility and to further deepen the shallow part of the Congo River, which is the deepest river in the world, from the current 8m to 10m over time further to 12.5m. ICTSI has concluded feasibility studies and is ready to invest in dredging the river where needed. This would allow for direct calls of larger mainline vessels.
